With the start of the pandemic and the prolonged confinement we’ve had to experience because of the lockdown, each of us have gained more time to spend on our own activities. Some have chosen to spend that time taking up new hobbies, like painting or raising plants, while others chose

to learn new skills, like playing a new instrument or learning how to knit. I know many, however, that have also chosen to start working on their summer bod during this period time, creating their own diy gym at home and following YouTube workout routines.

Choosing to be more proactive in maintaining a healthy level of activity everyday even during these times are good, even encouraged, however, we still have to keep some things in mind while working so as to prevent causing any injuries and lessen the possibility of accidents. Some of these things include:

1. Dressing Appropriately

Wear light, non-restrictive and breathable activewear that you can easily move around in while working out. Not only does it allow you to feel more comfortable while doing your routine, the right outfit can also help regulate your body temperature and reduce the chance of your clothes getting in the way while exercising.

2. Keeping Your Workout Space Clean

When you’re moving around a lot while working out, you won’t always be aware of your surroundings. That’s why it’s important to keep your workout space clean of clutter or trash. If you don’t, it can pose a risk to you tripping or slipping on something and having an accident. Just make it a habit to clean up your area before and after your exercise.

3. Staying Hydrated

When you workout, you lose a lot of the water in your body to sweat as a natural process of temperature regulation. This can cause problems when you’re not taking in as much water as you’re losing. That’s why it’s important to stay hydrated while working out. Make sure to keep a bottle of water with you at all times and take a minute now or then while you’re resting to drink some water before you continue your workout.

4. Being Mindful of Your Body's Condition

As much as you want to put your all in one workout, you should still be careful. Taking on an exercise routine that’s too taxing for your body can cause many problems and can even lead to injuries. Take each session steady and don’t push yourself too hard. Rather than looking for a routine that will give you the most difficulty, start off with something easier and slowly increase its difficulty as you go. You should also be mindful of when to stop when a workout is too hard for you or slow down when the pacing is too fast for you.

5. Warming Up and Cooling Down

Taking the time to have a warm up and cool down routine before and after your workout helps lessen your recovery time, prevents the possibility of injuries and improves your performance during the workout. This can include stretching, jogging, and other light exercises to get your body going or to slowly let it ease back to its normal state.

6. Getting an Appropriate Amount of Rest

Your body needs time to recover after workouts and any athlete or coach will tell you that. Resting gives your body the time needed to repair and get back to its best performance. You can do this by having one or two rest days every week or switching between different muscle groups every day to give the others a chance to recover.

Keeping in mind these 6 personal safety and health protocols while working out can help optimize your workout regimen in a way that allows you to maximize your results as well as helps prevent you from sustaining injuries during your sessions. With all these in mind, you can now freely enjoy working on getting your ideal body without worry.
